Weil-McLain or Burnham Boiler Won't Fire? Aquastat, Thermocouple & Rollout Triage

Cast-iron gas and oil boilers made by Weil-McLain (CGa, EG, GV, Ultra) and U.S. Boiler / Burnham (Series 2, Alpine, Independence) heat tens of thousands of properties across Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla, and Palmer.

While cast-iron heat exchangers last 25 to 35+ years, the electrical safety interlocks, pilot assemblies, and motorized vent dampers attached to them must all close in sequence before the main gas valve is allowed to open.

Step-by-Step Alaska Homeowner Protocol

What To Do Right Now While Waiting for Dispatch

Step 1: Listen for the Motorized Flue Vent Damper Turning Open

Look at the metal exhaust pipe leaving the top of the boiler. There is a square motorized damper box on the flue pipe. When a zone calls for heat, that damper must rotate 90 degrees to OPEN before the burner can light.

Step 2: Check If Your Boiler Has a Standing Pilot or Spark Ignition

Older Weil-McLain and Burnham boilers use a continuous standing pilot flame heating a copper thermocouple. If the pilot is out and won't stay lit when you release the gas knob, the thermocouple has burned out.

Step 3: Check the Low-Water Cutoff (LWCO) Red Light

If the red LED on your Hydrolevel or McDonnell & Miller low-water cutoff box is illuminated, the boiler thinks water level is dangerously low and locks out the burner.

Step 4: Call (907) 250-9156 for 24/7 Cast-Iron Boiler Repair

We carry universal thermocouples, spark ignition modules, Honeywell aquastats, vent damper motors, and gas valves on our emergency trucks.

Weil-McLain & Burnham Cast-Iron Failure Matrix

Diagnostic symptoms, mechanical fixes, and typical 2026 Anchorage / Mat-Su repair ranges:

Component / Issue What You Observe Professional Alaska Fix Typical Range
Burned-Out Thermocouple or Pilot Assembly Pilot light is out; flame dies immediately when you let go of the red gas valve button. Replace 30mV copper thermocouple, clean pilot orifice, and test gas valve magnet. $215 – $395
Stuck Automatic Flue Vent Damper (Field Controls / Effikal) Zone valve opens and pump runs, but damper never turns and burner never clicks. Diagnose damper end-switch, lock in safe position or install replacement damper head. $340 – $650
Failed Honeywell Aquastat Control Board (L8148E / L8124) Transformer hums or clicks rapidly (chattering relay); burner or circulator won't engage. Replace aquastat control box and immersion temperature well sensor. $495 – $950
Tripped Flame Rollout Switch / Blocked Chimney Boiler is completely dead to burner call; scorch marks near lower burner access door. Brush/inspect plugged cast-iron flue passages, check chimney draft, replace thermal cutout. $295 – $650

Why You Must Never Bypass a Boiler Rollout or Spill Switch

The small thermal fuse mounted near your boiler's burner tray (the rollout switch) and the spill switch on the draft hood only trip when flames or lethal carbon monoxide exhaust roll backward into your utility room. If either switch trips, the heat exchanger passages or chimney flue are restricted and require professional combustion service immediately.

As long as the cast-iron sectional block is not cracked or leaking water between sections, replacing an aquastat, circulator pump, or gas valve is fast and cost-effective. Our technicians give you an honest repair vs. replacement assessment on site.
